Sharing educational experiences with Asia
22nd to 24th October 2009
Palacio de Congresos de Valencia (Auditorio III)
Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, 60 (Valencia)
Asian countries, and in particular those from the Southeast region, have become an international reference concerning mathematical education. According to the recent PISA (Program for International Students Assessment) and TIMMS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) reports, students from China, Singapore and Korea, among other Asian countries, have been achieving outstanding results in their performance of mathematics and obtaining an important number of medals in International Mathematical Olympiads
In view of these facts, and considering the increasing relevance of math and science in a world of innovation and knowledge, this Symposium will address the following issues:
- How to share first-hand information about mathematics education in Asia.
- How to learn about principles and methods in Asian teaching of mathematics and compare them with those in Europe and Spain.
- How to establish a first contact on mathematical education between Spain and Asia for a lasting exchange of experiences and information.
Moreover, this Symposium will be an occasion to introduce and discuss some of the new tools and projects recently launched by different international consortia, such as those promoted by ICMI (International Commission on Mathematical Instruction).
The proceedings will be published on line by Casa Asia and CSIC (Spanish Higher Council for Scientific Research). They will be available from both Casa Asia´s and CISC´s web sites. In order to have the works published, a template will be placed on the website for the authors to download. Works should not exceed 20 pages extension. The proceedings will also include the debates that will follow the presentations, as well as the final conclusions.
The volume will be published in English only.
A summary on the content of the congress and on the conclusions will be presented to the Asia Europe Journal. The article will be signed by Bernardo Gómez, Manuel de León, Tomás Recio and Luis Rico.
