One year after the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that stroke Japan on March the 11th 2011, the situation in the affected areas has dramatically improved. Yet normality still requires a longer effort to settle in the heart of the people, especially the children of Tohoku. Casa Asia and ESADE Aid for Japan bring together Spanish children and Japanese children resident in Barcelona, together with their families, in a day of commemoration and solidarity which will help to better understand Japanese culture as well as create closer ties between the youngest generations of both countries.

Presentation: volcanos, earthquakes and tsunamis between legend and reality:
  • Mythological stories of earthquakes and volcanos in Japan and the world.
  • The tsunami in Rikuzentakata and the Satosan story.
Given by Renata Piazza, Casa Asia.

The reconstruction, one year later: the spirit of the samurai:
  • Demonstration of martial arts given by the Master Kozaburo Kagawa.

Let's paint a wall mural: we'll send a friendship message to children in Tohoku.

Workshops of Japanese popular culture:
  • Anime music (Japanese cartoons).
Performed by Yoko Suzuki (piano) and Alessandra Ivanoski (violin), in collaboration with Japanese students of the Japanese School in Sant Cugat and Japanese language Spanish students in Barcelona.

From the 7th to the 17th of March
Sala Alcalá 31
c/ Alcalá, 31
Madrid
Free admission with limited capacity.

The Cultural Centre of the Japan Foundation in Madrid organises an event to commemorate the first anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami of last 11th of March. This way the Japan Foundation would like to express its condolence and to express its gratitude to the Spanish people for the received support. The programme is divided in two blocks: the first one, under the title “Impact of the Disaster”, includes the screening of five documentary films curated by the specialist in Japanese cinema Fujiko Asano, as well as a roundtable on Friday 9th of March called “Perceptions of the Disaster”, and several talks with the directors of the chosen films and specialists in Japanese cinema.

In the second thematic block, called “Initiatives for Reconstruction”, the screening of two documentaries and a famous fiction film are included, Hula Girls, which under the title Getting over the Disaster share the same topic. Nowadays, efforts are still being made by those affected and by people away from the disaster, to support the affected areas and their path towards recovery and reconstruction. The documentaries Light Up Nippon and Fukushima Hula Girls will show us these efforts made to get over adversity and to turn them into opportunities. This will also be the topic of the roundtable “A New Urbanism” on the 16th of March.
