The International Dunhuang Project and the Philippine Senator Edgardo Angara, winners of Casa Asia Award 2010
The Casa Asia Award 2010, in its seventh edition, has been granted ex aequo to the International Dunhuang Project (China) and to the Philippine Senator Eduardo J. Angara. The jury has decided to award, on the one hand, the project Dunhuang for its enormous task in the recovery, preservation and exhibition of information and images of the manuscripts, paintings and textiles found in the Chinese city of Dunhuang and of the Silk Route, by means of Internet and of the promotion of educational and research programmes. On the other hand, the jury has also awarded the Philippine Senator Angara, for his committment in the strengthening of relations between Spain and the Philippines.
The jury of the Casa Asia Award 2010 was made up of José Eugenio Salarich, Director General of Foreign Policy for Asia and the Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; Roser Clavell, Vice Adviser of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat); Ignasi Cardelús, Delegate of Presidency and Institutional Relations of the Barcelona City Council; Ignacio Niño, Coordinador General of the Office of Strategy and International Action of 'Madrid Global' of the Madrid City Council; Xavier Batalla, journalist and diplomatic correspondent of La Vanguardia; Germán Bejarano, Director of Institutional Relations of Abengoa; Carme Riera, writer; Margaret Chen, of the Board of Managers of Telefónica; and Santiago Ruiz-Morales, Honorary General Consul of Uzbekistan. The President of the jury was the General Director of Casa Asia, Jesús Sanz.
Prizewinners
The International Dunhuang Project (IDP) is a multidisciplinary project created in 1994 and focused on researching, cataloguing and preserving the manuscripts and materials found in the Chinese city of Dunhuang, related to the archaeological heritage of the Silk Route, and t the creation of a digitalized database and of online free access (http://idp.bl.uk/) with information and images about thousands of paintings, objects, fabric, manuscripts and historical maps, at the disposal of researchers, academics and users. The project includes outside collections and the coordination was established in the Brittanica Library in collaboration with documentary centres in China, Japan, Russia and Germany.
The Senator Edgardo J. Angara is one of the Philippine politicians who has most committed to the promotion of Spanish language and culture and to the promotion of relations between Spain and the Philippines. Angara was the promotor of the Day of Hispano-Philippine Friendship.
Previous editions
The Casa Asia Award is annually granted to those people, institutions and entities that have been highlighted in the promotion of dialogue, concord and knowledge of the societies of Spain and the Asia-Pacific region. The award consists of 6.000 Euros in cash and of a commemorative trophy.
In preceding editions, Casa Asia Award was granted to teacher Raimon Pannikar and to the Department of Spanish of the University of Beijing and to CEIBS of Shanghai (2004); to the Pakistani Mukhtar Mai, to the journalists Rosa María Calaf and David Álvarez, to the NGO for Desarrollo-España (2005); to the collection 'Suma' of Spanish Art of the Prefecture Museum of Art of Nagasaki and to the Marugame Hirai Museum of Japan (2006); to the Spanish Jesuit Kike Figaredo and to the Publishing House of the People's Republic of China (2007); to Chingari Trust, non-government organization (ONG) and to the Pakistani writer and journalist Ahmed Rashid (2008); and Efe Agency and to the Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe (2009). The award presentation will be carried out throughout the following year.
