'Breathless', by the Korean Yang Ik-june, wins the Golden Durian awarded by Casa Asia at the BAFF 2009

Breathless, a study of violence in the underworld of South Korea, by the film director Yang Ik-june, has achieved the Golden Durian at the 11th Barcelona Asian Film Festival (BAFF 2009), annually awarded by Casa Asia. The Malaysian film Sell Out! by Yeo Joon Han, and the Thai film Agrarian Utopia by Uruphong Raksasad, have achieved special mentions.

The jury of the 11th Barcelona Asian Film Festival (BAFF 2009), made up of the Malaysian producer Wong Tuck Cheong, the film director Naoko Ogigami, the director of Teuve acquisitions Adrià Monés and the journalist and cinematographic critic Philipp Engel, has awarded the Golden Durian, which is granted by Casa Asia every year in every edition of BAFF, to Breathless by Yang Ik-june (South Korea, 2008). The jury has compensated this study of everyday violence in the underworld of South Korea, which marks the brilliant debut of Yang Ik-june, orchestra man (director, main character, scriptwriter and producer) of a film that captivates for its overwhelming energy and dismantled honesty.

Two special mentions have been agreed: For the Malaysian film Sell Out! by Yeo Joon Han (Malaysia, 2008), and for Agrarian Utopia by the Thai director Uruphong Raksasad (Thailand, 2008), for what's unusual of its approach and masterly direction.

The same jury has decided that the Cinematk Award, which guarantees the distribution of the winning film in our territory and its screening at the Canal Cinematk (Teuve), for the film Serbis by the Philippine Brillante Mendoza (Philippines, 2008), a rich, modern, provocative film, chaired by two unforgettable female characters that will finally introduce the new wave of Philippine cinema in our cinemas.
