Speaker   Jagdish Thackersey is the author of "Mysticism of the East"
He was born on the 4th of March 1951 in the bosom of a family of textile industrials of Bombay. In 1857 his ancestor Seth Thackersey founded The Hindoostan Spinning & Weaving Mills a company of fabric fabrication led by Jagdish for years, and that experiments now a relay by the sixth generation.

The Thackersey are an orthodox and very religious family run by a traditional discipline of India. Parents, children, uncles and aunts, grandparents and cousins live and eat together in a great family house they share. Since they were children, they are instructed in the fundaments of life: honesty, integrity, as well as the importance of creating and maintaining a good social reputation.

Due to the nature of their textile business -that makes fabrics for the local market and for exportation-, the Thackersey have had the chance to get to know and experiment the western culture, broadening their horizons and allowing them to appreciate the different between both lifestyles and to value the best of everyone of them.

In the case of Jagdish, he was educated like a boarder of an Irish Catholic school in north India, at the feet of the Himalaya. Life in the mountains offered the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature and the simplicity of the people of the place. When he turned thirteen, he began to become fond of photography, adopting it like a channel of visual communication that allowed him project is own thoughts. And since then, photography has accompanies him as his main hobby and as a means of expression of his particular look.

After graduating at the University of Bombay in 1973, he immediately joined the family business. His professional activity did not leave too much free time, but it wasn't a reason to abandon photography. During these four decades of self-learning and experimentation, his desire has been to become a professional photographer.

Since 2002, Jagdish Thackersey collaborates generously with Bhatia hospital, a charity institution of the centre of Bombay, as a member of the Board of Administration. His grandfather was one of the founding members of this centre. Now that the new generation begins to be in charge of the fabric factory of the family, Jagdish Thackersey has more time to devote himself to his great hobby. "Mysticism of the East" is the first result of this new period.

Additional information   The images proposed by Jagdish Thackersey do not want to be a representation of the reality of the East, but a subjective pshychological interpretation of its exotic nature and spirituality. For this reason, the original photographs have suffered a digital transformation to become suggestive black and white images, applying for this process a very special author technique. The contrast between these two colours symbolises the struggle between the good and the evil, between Ying and Yang, between two opposed forces, but complementary at the same time.

Is this my first individual exhibition? - Jagdish Thackersey says - "I have chosen Barcelona because it is a wonderful and fascinating city: cosmopolitan, decorated with the revolutionary architecture of Gaudí, inhabited by tolerant people where life is intense and pleasant. To appreciate art and culture seems to be part of the nature of people of Barcelona. I cannot think of a better place that to share my vision on the East".

"Mysticism of the East" comes from a selection and recovery project of the more than 10000 snapshots that Jagdish Thackersey has accumulated in his 45 years of photography hobby, which have majoritarilly been devoted to landscapes, architecture and people. The common denominator of the selected images is exotic nature, spirituality and mysticism that identifies the Eastern society.
